We Visited Washington, D. C.
On Christmas Day of 1996, nine members of our family visited my nephew's family in
Maryland. All evening, we sitting around a table, ate and talked, enjoying our happy holiday's
reunion. The next day, we drove to visit Washington D. C. It is a beautiful city with very
tidy streets and building after building. It is the capital of the United States and was named
after George Washington, the first president of the nation. At the first, we arrived at the
front of Washington Monument on the mall. It is a 555-foot tall marble obelisk, the world tallest
masonry structure. We took an elevator to the highest-level observation tower for a panoramic
view of the nation's capital: The Potomac River in majestic fashion snakes past in front of the
Jefferson Memorial and National Airport on its way to Chesapeake Bay; the city fans out
gracefully, offering a multitude of pleasures to the tourists from all over the world; the
imposing Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials stand on the bank of the river, respectively, the
White House, the Capitol, and the Mall itself, all of these are vivid reminders of the nation.
The Capitol was completed in 1863, and is in the center of the city. It is the work place
of the Senate and Representatives. The statue of Freedom stands atop the Capitol Dome,
which is above 285-feet of the plaza. I had visited the inside of the Capitol when I had just
came to the United States from China. My deep impression was the colorful Corridors,
featuring painted walls, constructed in two rings, the inner representing the thirteen original
states of the Union, and the outer depicting four hundred years of American history.
Then we visited the Lincoln Memorial, which was designed by Henry Bacon and completed
in 1922. Its 36 Doric columns represent the number of states in the Union at the time of Lincoln's
assassination. In the center of the memorial sits a 10-foot tall statue of Abraham Lincoln.
He was the sixteenth president of United States who stood up for the liberation of the
slaves, so that people cherish his memory and commemorate him forever. The Memorial
is located at the west end of the Mall on the bank of the Potomac and is the site of
many historical events, such as the Dr. Martin Luther King “I have a dream" speech.
At noon, we went to "Cha Yang" in Chinatown for lunch. It had delicious dishes and
wasn't too expensive. It's said that former President Bush has often been patronized there.
The Chinatown in Washington is smaller than in Boston, but its decorated archway
is very stylish. After eating, we went into the Space Flight Museum and saw many planes,
including a fighter-plane, which scored one victory after another in World War II. There is
a huge rocket room there, with a few rocket heads as well. It's said that the biggest rocket came
from the Soviet Union, but it is less powerful than the others. We learned some facts about
space flight and saw the history of the rapid development of flight there.
The White House, residence of every American president since John Adams known
also as the Executive Mansion, was completed in 1800. It's said that the mansion has undergone
the British arson attack during the War of 1812. Since 1961, each First Lady has contributed to
a continuing effort to refurbish the interior. Now, eleven of its 102 rooms are open to public for
tours. On this Christmas Day, there was a big and tall Christmas tree standing on the mall,
out of the south gate of the White House. We visited there during the Christmas Candle Party
of the White House, which was open to the public this year. It was very joyful. There were
perhaps ten thousand people enjoying the party in the evening. I looked around and saw the
Washington Monumentjust likes a lighthouse. It serves as a familiar beacon, visible from many
corners of the city. With other national landmarks, like the Lincoln Memorial and the
U.S. Capitol, it inspires the poets, brighten the night sky, and provide a memorable view for
passengers. About 9 PM. we drove back to my nephew's home. Touring together with my
family was an incredibly joyful experience!
( It’s pity, the Christmas Candle Party was canceled after 911. )
